Crooked Cards
Graphic Design Internship
The cards you hate to love.
Crooked Cards LLC specializes in the perfect cards for that special someone in your life— or that extra annoying coworker you'd love to serve an impolite sentiment to.
As a part of the design team, we worked towards rendering the perfect blend of funny and crude, with a little help from our writing department who delivered our extra snappy punch lines. TIMELINE: May - Aug 2021; 3 months TOOLS: Photoshop, Illustrator, Trello, Zoom ADVISED BY: Christopher Rusznica; Zoë Saphir |
"Revenge is best served with a card"
- Crooked Cards
Project 01: Birthdays
Process WorkThe first project we were expected to get our feet wet. That meant getting comfortable with the wilder, more inappropriate sides of ourselves. We were expected to bring our best, and worst to the table, taking only three of our most inappropriately hysterical concepts to a finished product.

Project 2: Hook ups & Babies
|
Process WorkHook ups, casual flings, and cards for the Baby Daddy to Be were the central focus of our second project. We were allowed to select from a few different puns and jokes provided to us by the writing team, and were encouraged to make tweaks or even write our own content.
Several designs contain my own hand lettering, and there were multiple rounds of revision to get the right feel to the text. |
Project 3: Marriage, Anniversaries, & Divorce
|
Process WorkYou can usually find a good, wholesome "Congratulations on your Marriage" card, but how about a "Congrats on the Divorce" or a saucy anniversary card?
We were encouraged to take several punchlines and do multiple iterations for them considering many were extremely versatile. With a combination of sassy and sweet, I ended up with 6 different cards for this submission category. |
Project 4: Social Media
A portion of the internship itself was dedicated to the development of promotional assets for the Crooked Cards LLC website to use in preparation for the kickstarter launch. We were given a copy of the brand guidelines, including colorways and font families that we could and could not use, and encouraged to create a "Crooked-ism", using the brands limited color palette as inspiration.

Project 5: Holidays, Careers, & Roommates
|
Process WorkSome of the most frustrating times in someone's life are usually when other people are involved. We wanted to overstep our boundaries, and really broaden our illustrations to both sides of the page. While it is more expensive to print, we were encouraged to design them to allow us to get familiar with accounting not only for the standard card bleed, but also to design with the (card) gutter in mind.
